Field Mouse

Scientific Name: Apodemus sylvaticus

Appearance

• The adults of this species can grow up to 8cm and the tail can grow from 7cm to 8.9cm long.

• Usually the male weights 25g, and the female is a bit smaller.

• Their fur is usually different colours together depending on the streak, it goes from orange brown to yellowish and white on the belly.

Lifecycle

• They can live up to 2 years in captivity but their lifespan is only 2-3 months.

• The gestation period takes about 25 days.

• Males can be aggressive towards one another and to the young, who are then driven from the nest.

Habits

• They eat a high proportion of the seed crop of trees such as oak, beech, ash, lime, hawthorn and sycamore.

• When seeds are least available they feed of larval and adult insects such as small snails.
