How to Build Simple Fly Traps in Australia
To control houseflies outdoors is pretty simple. Fly swatters work but are messy and insecticides can be smelly, toxic, and expensive.
An easy way to keep flies from ruining your BBQ and buzzing your guest is to make a simple trap from an empty plastic soft drink bottle. Baited with mince meat, prawns or some sweetened water will quickly lure and snare lots of pesky houseflies.
Flies will quickly smell the bait and then fly all the way into the bottle to feed on it. Once inside, they will find it hard to get out as they fly down the bottle’s neck of the trap. Flies can’t easily navigate themselves out of the narrow opening. They will also be unable to fly out when their wings get wet.
This simple and inexpensive trap may be used indoors or outdoors in Australian conditions.
Draw a line around the bottle by using a permanent marker, below the neck.
Cut the Top off the Bottle
Use a sharp knife with a serrated blade to cut along the line, severing the top of the bottle. Cut on a cutting board so there’s no damage to your counter or table surface.
Flip the neck over and insert back into the bottle as above diagram.
To service the trap, empty dead flies once it is full or smelly and re-bait your trap. If you decide to use meat as bait, just rinse it out or create a new trap.
