Protect your investment. Choose a termite management system tailored to your structure and environment.

Most Effective Termite Barrier Products in Sydney
When it comes to protecting your property from termites, choosing the right products is crucial.
Btw, don’t waste your time looking for “Bunnings termite barriers” if you are battling active termites or building a new house and need it certified.
Bunnings DO have a few products such as the Carlray Termite Shielding, Protect-Us 300g No More Solder Termite Proof Flexi-gel and Termite Protector Weep Hole Screen which can contribute to termite protection, but they aren’t meant to be standalone treatments for active termites or your new home.
These products are certainly manufactured to comply with Australian Standard AS 3660.1-2014 for termite management, but for your new home to be certified as termite-protected under the Building Code of Australia (BCA), the termite management system must be installed correctly and in accordance with the relevant standards.
Improper installation can leave your home vulnerable to termite infestations and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
To ensure compliance and certification, it’s advisable to have the termite barrier system installed by a licensed professional such as A1 Pest Control who can provide the necessary documentation and warranties.
This approach not only aligns with the BCA requirements but also offers peace of mind that your home is adequately protected against termites.
Below is a list of the most effective termite barriers and products in my experience.
From chemical termite barriers to baiting systems and physical barriers, these products have proven to work well in Sydney’s termite-prone environment.
- Termidor®:https://www.termidor.com.au/ Termidor® is one of the most popular and effective liquid termiticides. It creates a barrier around the property that either repels or kills termites on contact. It’s commonly used by pest control pros.
- Premise®: https://www.au.envu.com/pest-management/products/premisesc200Premise® is another liquid termiticide known for its effectiveness in treating active infestations. It’s long-lasting, so it’s useful for both pre- and post-construction treatments.
- Trelona®: https://pest-control.basf.com.au/products/trelona-atbs ATBS (Advance Termite Baiting System): Trelona® ATBS is a highly effective baiting system that provides continuous monitoring. It’s great for detecting and eliminating termites over time.
- Sentricon®: https://www.corteva.com.au/products-and-solutions/crop-solutions/residential-pest-control.html Sentricon® is a high-tech termite baiting system. It works by luring termites to bait stations that contain poison, which they then carry back to the colony, eventually wiping it out.
- Exterra®: https://www.ensystex.com.au/pages/exterra-home Exterra® is a termite baiting system that introduces termites to a bait containing a growth inhibitor, killing them over time. It’s an excellent solution for long-term protection.
- Kordon®: https://kordon.net/ Kordon® is a physical termite barrier made from flexible plastic sheets. It’s installed under the foundation of buildings to create an effective, long-lasting protection barrier against termites.

- Nemesis Termite Baiting System: https://www.pcti.com.au/Nemesis/What-is-Nemesis.aspx Nemesis utilizes chlorfluazuron to disrupt termite development, leading to colony elimination.
- Greenzone Perimeter System: https://www.greenzonebarrier.com/products/perimeter-system/

What is the Greenzone termite perimeter system?
The Greenzone Termite Perimeter System is a pre-construction physical termite barrier that combines a flexible foam layer with bifenthrin insecticide. It’s designed to be installed around service penetrations (like plumbing pipes) during the construction phase. This dual-action system helps prevent termite entry and also reduces the risk of concrete expansion joint cracking. At A1 Pest Control, we recommend the Greenzone system for new builds or major renovations because of its innovative design and long-term protection.
Do termite barriers really work?
Yes, termite barriers absolutely work when they are installed correctly by licensed professionals. At A1 Pest Control, we use both physical and chemical termite barriers to create long-lasting protection around your property. These systems are designed to either block termite access physically or repel and eliminate termites chemically before they can reach your home. Regular inspections and proper installation are key to ensuring their effectiveness.
What is the best barrier for termites?
The best termite barrier depends on your property’s construction type, location, and existing termite risk. At A1 Pest Control, we often recommend:
Chemical barriers using trusted brands like Termidor or Trelona — effective for up to 8 years with ongoing monitoring.
Physical barriers like Greenzone or Kordon, ideal for new builds.
For high-risk areas in Sydney, a combination of physical and chemical barriers offers the most comprehensive protection.
Our licensed technicians will inspect your property and tailor a termite management plan based on your needs.
Can I install my own termite barrier?
While DIY options may seem appealing, A1 Pest Control strongly advises against self-installation. Termite barrier systems must meet Australian Standard AS3660 and be installed by licensed professionals to be legally compliant and effective. Incorrect installation can leave hidden gaps, void warranties, and fail to protect your home. Trust our expert team to deliver a safe, certified, and long-lasting termite barrier solution.

The Australian Standard AS 3660.1:2014 — Termite Management Part 1: New Building Work — outlines the requirements for installing these chemical barriers, including where and how much termiticide to apply.
Horizontal Barriers:
These are applied underneath slabs or flooring, before the slab is poured.
Purpose: Prevent termites from entering through the soil directly under the building.
Application: The soil is treated with termiticide before pouring the slab or installing flooring.
Rate: According to AS 3660.1, 5 litres per square metre is the standard application rate.
Vertical Barriers:
These are applied to soil adjacent to building elements, like the side of footings, retaining walls, plumbing penetrations, and around the perimeter of the building.
Purpose: Stop termites from entering through wall or footing penetrations.
Application: Soil is treated along the sides of structures, typically in trenches.
Rate: The standard application rate is 100 litres per cubic metre of soil, which equates to 1.5 litres per linear metre per 100mm depth for trenching work.
Important Notes:
Only licensed pest managers should apply chemical barriers.
Termiticides must be registered with the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority).
The manufacturer’s label instructions must always be followed, as they may specify rates based on concentration.
Termite Barriers FAQ
Please read ahead for the answers to the following Frequently Asked Questions regarding termite protection: What is the best barrier for termites?
Do termite barriers really work?
How much does a termite barrier cost in Australia?
Can you do a termite barrier yourself?
Is there any such thing as a “Bunnings Termite Barrier?
1. What is the best barrier for termites?
There are several effective termite barriers, and the best one largely depends on the type of treatment you want and the specifics of your property. The main types are:
Physical Barriers: These are made of fine mesh or stainless steel and are installed around the foundation of the home. They’re very effective in preventing termites from entering but must be professionally installed.
Chemical Barriers: These are applied to the soil around your home. They create a toxic zone that repels or kills termites as they try to enter the structure. Some common chemicals used include termiticides like fipronil, bifenthrin, and imidacloprid.
Baiting Systems: These involve placing bait stations around your property. The bait is designed to attract termites, which then carry it back to the colony, killing the entire nest. These systems are more of a monitoring and control method.
Moisture Barriers: While not as common, controlling moisture levels around your foundation can help deter termites. Termites are drawn to moisture, so ensuring good drainage can help reduce risk.
- Liquid Barriers: See above. Interchangeable with “Chemical Barriers”.
2. Do termite barriers really work?
Yes, termite barriers are generally very effective if properly installed and maintained. Physical barriers can last for decades, while chemical barriers need to be reapplied every 5–10 years, depending on the type. Baiting systems can also work but are more of a monitoring and long-term control method rather than an instant fix. Proper installation and regular inspections are key to ensuring they remain effective.
3. How much does a termite barrier cost in Australia?
The cost of a termite barrier in Australia can vary depending on the type, size of the property, and the treatment method. Here’s a rough breakdown:
Physical Barriers: Installation can range from $3,000 to $10,000+, depending on the size of your property.
Chemical Barriers: The cost for a full treatment of a standard-sized home can range from $2,500 to $5,500.
Baiting Systems: These systems generally cost between $2,200 and $5,500, but they’re typically more for ongoing monitoring and control.
It’s always a good idea to get a few quotes from pest control companies in your area.
4. Can you do a termite barrier yourself?
Yes, you can install some types of termite barriers yourself, but it requires a good understanding of termite biology and the correct installation process. For example, some DIY products for chemical barriers are available, but applying them incorrectly can reduce their effectiveness.
Similarly, physical barriers can be installed yourself, but it might be quite labour-intensive, and it’s crucial to ensure there’s no gap in the installation.
Most people prefer to hire professionals for termite barriers, especially chemical ones, because it requires proper knowledge of the product, application techniques, and safety.
5. Is there such a thing as a “Bunnings Termite Barrier“?
See our (mainly) impartial reviews in the link above. Yes, Bunnings, a popular hardware store chain in Australia, does sell products related to termite control.
However, you won’t find a complete, professional-grade barrier system like you would from a pest control service like A1 Pest Control Sydney.
Instead, Bunnings offers:
DIY Termite Treatments: These can include chemicals like termite sprays, bait stations, and soil treatments. They also offer physical barriers, like mesh systems for use around the home.
Prevention Products: You can find things like termite-resistant timber or pest control products for maintaining your home.
These products are typically aimed at DIYers and home maintenance.
Caution: While they may work for very minor termite control or as a “peace of mind” preventive measure, they may not be as reliable as professional treatments for serious infestations.
6. How much diluted chemical should be used for the average sized house?
The actual amount needed will depend on the size and construction of the house, as well as the soil type, but this serves as a general guideline.
- Application Rate:
Termidor HE, the premium termiticide, is applied via the label at a rate of 100 litres of prepared spray per cubic metre of soil.
- Dilution:
The Termidor HE label specifies that 625 mL of the product is to be mixed with 100 L of water to achieve a 0.06% mix.
- Vertical Treated Zones:
These zones should be a minimum of 150 mm wide and applied to a depth 50 mm below the top of the footing.
- Horizontal Treated Zones:
These zones are typically created by digging trenches and applying the diluted solution to the soil.
- Concrete Slabs:When applying under concrete slabs, the application volume should be increased to 200 litres per cubic metre of soil due to uneven distribution.
- This information is for guidance only. A licensed pest control operator should always be consulted to determine the correct application rate for your specific situation.
- Always follow the label instructions for Termidor HE when mixing and applying the solution.
- Do not apply Termidor HE to internal surfaces or to trees bearing edible fruit or nuts.
- If you are dealing with termite nests, you will need to drill holes into the pole or tree, flood the nest with the prepared spray, and seal the holes after treatment.
Termites are known to cause tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage, and it is very doubtful if you could stop all that damage with a $20 bottle of liquid chemical.
Final thoughts:
While DIY options from Bunnings are accessible, for full termite protection, a professional treatment with a solid warranty is still the best option.
It’s also important to get your property regularly inspected, especially if you live in areas prone to termites.
Bunnings Weep Holes and Termite Barriers: Review of Weepa & Weepguard – Ensuring Structural Integrity and Pest Prevention
Weep holes, small openings in the foundation of buildings, play an essential role in ensuring proper drainage and preventing moisture build-up in walls. However, they can also become entry points for unwanted pests, particularly termites, if not properly protected. This article explores the role of weep holes in construction, their significance in moisture control, and the importance of protecting these openings from termites.
Weepa weep hole protectors – Info from above photo is reproduced below:
Cavity brick walls need weep holes for drainage and ventilation but these openings allow access for pests and bushfire embers. Weepa weep hole barriers stop pests and bushfire embers entering your home.

These definitely need some effort and technique to fit squarely into the weep holes.
Our next attempt finally gets there!
I worked out that you need to get the applicator to line up with the hole and to push in the top, followed by the bottom in order to get the protection strip inserted effectively.
It isn’t by any means easy and requires a lot of determination and brute strength to get it in properly.

The applicator has two sides for different sized holes, a 30mm side and a 20mm side as shown below:
Next up I reviewed the stainless steel weep hole barriers suited for extra vermin protection and is suitable for areas prone to bushfires.

Are you building a new home or extension in Sydney NSW?
See our understanding of it below:
SECTION A — NEW BUILDING WORK
Subterranean Termite Management Systems
A1. SCOPE
Based on Australian Standard AS 3660.1–2000 Termite Management. Part 1: New Building Work,
this section outlines the design and installation requirements for termite (subterranean termite) management systems
in new buildings, extensions, or renovations at ground level. The goal is to prevent concealed termite entry into
the building by installing effective chemical or physical barriers.
A1.1 Warranties
All termite management installation work must be carried out professionally and to a high standard. However,
the installer cannot guarantee complete prevention of termite entry.
Total protection may not always be possible due to variables like construction methods, building design,
environmental factors, and specific client requirements. Even when termite barriers comply fully with AS 3660.1–2000,
termites may still bypass or bridge them, and evidence of activity might only be found during future inspections.
As complete success cannot be guaranteed, installers may offer alternative service options or monitoring programs,
depending on the client’s chosen level of protection and site conditions.
A1.2 Documentation
The installer must provide detailed pre- and post-installation documentation describing the type of termite
management system proposed and installed, along with any limitations, exclusions, site-specific considerations,
and additional advice.
A2. QUOTATION AND AGREEMENT
The following items must be included in a Subterranean Termite Management Quotation and Agreement prepared by the installer:
- The Quotation and Agreement reference number.
- The total number of pages in the document.
- The name of the building owner and, if different, the client’s name.
- Contact details of the person requesting the work.
- The date the Quotation and Agreement is prepared.
- The address of the building or structures covered
- All terms & conditions relating to the Quotation & Agreement including but not limited to – limitations, special conditions and exclusions
- The method of the termite management which would include whether a single method or multiple integrated barriers would be installed, the details of the name of the system/barrier, where it is located, how it is installed and all limitations according to the construction design and environment
- List the details of any other system components, eg; termite bait systems
